Just by having a quick look at some photos of the Villa Mairea it is easy to get an understanding of what Alvar Aalto was trying to achieve with his design. From the photos below we can see that materiality has been a major focus point in Aalto's design, with not only helping the structure fit in with its surrounding landscape, but making it seem as though the landscapes trying to fit in with the structure. Aalto brings this building to life with the use timber posts strategically placed around the house which make it seem like this structure has grown up and out of its landscape. From this we can see that Aalto was trying to create a warm and comforting feel of being in the middle of a forrest to which would normally be quite dark and lonely.
